Description:

This is in response to the Explain Evolution Challenge. Sorry about the screeching audio, I had my mic poorly setup, and I don't have a good movie editing program to fix it after the fact (any help would be appreciated!) Won't let it happen again...

Science makes assumptions; however, 1) the assumptions are justified by something other than faith and 2) even the basic assumptions of science can be and have been challenged.

You make assumptions, and then, as in court, try to prove them right or wrong beyond a reasonable doubt. But there are always underlying assumptions. You will never be able to one day wake up and have fully proved everything with science and be done with it. I think the point I'm trying to make is subtler than I'm getting across. (I am a biochemist btw)

Well I hate to call you Captain Obvious, but yeah, science makes assumptions then sets out to prove them either true or false. What's your point exactly? FYI, you won't find one scientist that claims the big bang is a fact if that's what you're trying to get at.

Oh I believe whole heartedly in the truth of science. Convincing everyone else of that is the problem. And I'm not even sure everyone should be convinced. Ignorance is bliss for some. Religion has its place.

A fellow early riser! I agree that logic is based on premise. "Truth" is a much tougher nut to crack.

I think that given a certain set of assumptions in religion, you can logically reach many conclusions religious people make. For example as a Christian, if you assume that the bible is true, etc, you might be able to logically conclude that stem cell research is wrong. What I'm trying to point out is that the debate about science and religion should be taken to the founding beliefs of each.

I beleive you and I'm not trying to bust your ass. But your suggestion that the assumptions made by science and religion are very simular is different than an observation people accept assumptions made in each. There is a distinct difference in the rationale employed in arriving at assumptions between each. They share a word, beleif or assumption, but that, (I think), is negated by the difference in how the beleifs or assumptions are reached.

We cannot know what existed before information existed. We can only guess/conjecture etc. That is what I mean when I say you have to assume something. In math we assume 1+1=2 (among other things), its the same idea. There ARE assumptions in science. They are just very good, intuitive ones.

"Eventually you will get to a point where you have to assume something." What on Earth makes you say that??? That's the idea behind science. It's fundamental, basic stuff. You can't just choose to redefine "science" and "religion" to your own needs. If you want to have any sort of disussion you have to use accepted definitions.

As I come from a family of experimental scientists, and not theorists, I tend to have a wait and see approach too. And yes, I know the book, and quite a few string theorists (who are mostly just arrogant bastards, smart ones though).
