Description:

A local fire department hits a rough patch. Only a hand full of people are left to protect the township of Prairie Creek. Now the department hopes to merge. "We had all these people quit, because the merge didn't go through, so now there is four of us left on the department," said Larry Eyre, a Prairie Creek Firefighter. The Prairie Creek Fire Department wants to merge with the Prairieton Fire department. They did try joining forces, but a petition full of signatures that could have made the merge possible couldn't be verified by an auditor. "We were told they only verified one signature, and they threw the rest of them out," said Tom Eversole, the acting chief. A merge could put folks at ease knowing both departments would respond if their house were to catch on fire. "You're looking at 20 minutes before they are here" said Larry Eyre. Fire officials worry that with response time doubled, more folks are in danger. Tom Eversole's been battling blazes for 10 years, and doesn't want to see the department burn away. Lack of funding lead to outdated equipment..one of the main reasons half the volunteers left. "It's a little town nobody cares about," said Eyre. If this merger doesn't happen soon, the doors could remain closed for good. Members of the Prairie Creek Fire Department are still the "first" responders. But with only four volunteer firefighters left, they have to call in backup before any flames can be put out.
