The only good things about this film are the incredible on location scenes and the soundtrack. The movie and book were sour attempts to try and rationalize the 1948 partition of Palestine and the terrorism carried out during this era against the British by Zionist extremeists. The bombing of the King David Hotel was carried out in real life by Menachem Begin who later became Prime Minister.

The wonderful location shots and soundtrack are indeed two wonderful things about this movie. As for the movie's plot and premise, based on the Leon Uris novel EXODUS, are grounded on sound history. The Jews were promised a national home by the 1917 Balfour Declaration and when that home was needed the most during the Nazi Holocaust, the doors of Palestine were clamped shut to Jewish immigration by Britain's 1939 White Paper. . During that no-immigration period, 6,000,000 Jews were from over 20 different European countries were systematically murdered (more than 1/2 the Jews of Europe and 33%, 1 out of every 3 Jews in the ENTIRE WORLD world were murdered in the 1939-1945 Nazi period). When WWII ended in 1945, Britain still refused to allow immigration, the remnant of Jews still alive, most displaced from their homes, and sought immigration to Palestine. Hence, illegal immigration began then.

The movie's depiction of internment of the Holocaust's survivors in detention camps on Cyprus is accurate. Over 25,000 Jews were interned there, and the Jews on the real Haganah ship EXODUS 1947 were sent after British capture to Germany to former Nazi concentration camps. The imprisonment in Acre as shown in the movie of Irgun men like the Dov Landau character (Dov Gruner in real life) happened as did the bombing depicted of the King David Hotel. King David Hotel was headquarters of British mandate power. Its bombing was carried out by the Irgun Zvai Leumi minority Zionist faction, led indeed by Menahem Begin. Irgun was apart from the mainstream Haganah that organized the illegal immigration. Begin later entered Israeli politics and remained on the fringe most of next 30 years until factors in 1970s Israeli politics in the 1970s including the losses suffered in the Yom Kipor War brought his coalition party to power.

All of the events of 1946 and 1947 mentioned above were depicted with relative accuracy in the movie though names were changed in line with the novel. It is terrible that Palestinians suffered so much in the creation of the State of Israel, but after the Holocaust, the need for one state in the world with a Jewish majority, one state where persecuted Jews might have haven, cannot be denied. Nor can be denied the historic claim of the Jewish people that this one state be Palestine.

The Jews tried to gain their state through peaceful means. For them, arms were for defense and a last resort. Jews throughout the world over the course of 50 years before Israel's creation contributed millions of dollars paid to Turks and then Arabs for the purchase land in Palestine that the Jews at their own cost and through own industry developed. After the Balfour Declaration they hoped that a Jewish led government would succeed the British to rule Palestine. (TO BE CONTINUED)

Though Jews dreamed of having the entire mandatory Palestine (Israel, Gaza & West Bank) as their country, they accepted the United Nations partition plan that divided mandatory Palestine between Jewish and Arab states. The vote was 33-12 in favor - the 12 votes against were Cuba, Greece, India and 9 Muslim countries. With no Jewish country to vote in favor, the 33 countries in favor were neutral - neither Jewish nor Muslim. The Jews accepted this the Arabs did not.

As movie shows, the day after Israel was born May 15, 1948, 5 Arab countries attacked. All independent states with their own armies. Isreal without such means managed to defend itself. Arab Palestinians fled to avoid the violence in hopes they would soon return when invading Arab armies did as they promised "drive the Jews into the sea". Well, the Jews were not massacred like the Holocaust. Those who fled in hopes the Jews would again perish became themselves refugees.

As the movie also shows, Israel offered full citizenship to those Arabs who would stay. That promise has been honored despite the constant state of war under which Israel lives with most of the Arab world. The Arabs who remained over 150,000 and as Israeli Arabs became and remain a significant minority in the "Jewish state", retained their property and gained full rights of citizenship to vote, freedom of speech, press and religion in scope unsurpassed in all the Middle East.

There's truth too in movie portrayal of Tahal, fictional Arab village leader who wanted to live peacably with Jews and was murdered by Arabs. Two of the three Arab leaders willing to make peace with Israel were murdered by Arabs -- Jordan's King Abdullah in 1950, Egypt's Anwar Sadat in 1982. As part of each "intifada" hundreds, even thousands of Palestinian Arabs with positive dealings with Jews have also been murdered by fellow Arabs who can't condone Israel's existence.

Amazingly, as good as the movie and book are, the true story of illegal immigration is even more harrowing and miraculous when one reads of the real story of Haganah ship EXODUS 1947 and ships before and after. The illegal Jewish immigration to Palestine and Israel's birth is an important tale the movie and novel tell well. I also recommend book OH JERUSALEM by Dominique Lapierre. Thanks again for the sound track, hopefully more of this movie will be posted.

Speaking of the subject, illegal immigration is choaking us to death here in KLos Angeles. Half of our hospitals are closed and our schools are seriously over populated. It's a mess. I don't know about Palestine, but Los Angeles is jacked up!
